Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America
The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, with its headquarters located
in the City of New York, is an Eparchy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of
Constantinople.
The mission of the Archdiocese is to proclaim the Gospel of Christ, to teach
and spread the Orthodox Christian Faith, to energize, cultivate, and guide
the life of the Church in the United States of America according to the Orthodox
Christian Faith and Tradition.
The Greek Orthodox Church in America sanctifies the faithful through divine
worship, especially the Holy Eucharist and other Sacraments, building the
spiritual and ethical life of the faithful in accordance with the Holy
Scriptures, Sacred Tradition, the doctrines and canons of the Ecumenical
and local Councils, the canons of the Holy Apostles and the Fathers of the
Church and of all other Councils recognized by the Orthodox Church. |

Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey
His Eminence, Metropolitan EVANGELOS of New Jersey, the Spiritual Leader
of the Greek Orthodox Faithful in the Mid-Atlantic States, has joyously announced
the recent acquisition of an Office Building in Westfield, NJ, that will
serve as the new permanent Ecclesiastical Headquarters for the Greek Orthodox
Metropolis of New Jersey. Under the spiritual jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox
Archdiocese of America and the Venerable Ecumenical Patriarchate of
Constantinople, the Holy Metropolis of New Jersey serves the Greek Orthodox
Parish/Communities of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and the Greater
Philadelphia Region, with the Ecclesiastical See being in the state of New
Jersey. The Greek Orthodox Diocese of New Jersey was established in 1977
After 30 years since its establishment, the Holy Metropolis of New Jersey
has acquired its own Metropolis Headquarters. The first Bishop and later
Titular Metropolitan of New Jersey was His Excellency, Metropolitan Silas
of blessed memory, succeeded by Bishop George, also of blessed memory. By
decision of the venerable and Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople,
the Greek Orthodox Diocese of New Jersey was elevated from a Diocese to a
Metropolis in 2003, and with the election, consecration and enthronement
of our spiritual leader, His Eminence, Metropolitan Evangelos is the first
Metropolitan of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey. |

The Society for Orthodox Christian History in the
Americas
The Society for Orthodox Christian History in the Americas (SOCHA) exists
to promote the study of the history of the Orthodox Christian Church in the
New World; to collect source materials and make them available to researchers
and scholars; to disseminate historical information to the public; and to
encourage networking among those engaged in the study of American Orthodox
history. SOCHA is particularly dedicated to this study based on the examination
of primary sources with integrity and clarity.
Anyone who has made a comparative study of the history of Orthodox Christianity
in North America has probably quickly surmised that there is something of
a historiographical problem. That is, the writing of the history of Orthodox
Christianity in America has been plagued with jurisdictional squabbles, claims
to primacy and other agendas, often with little attention to what primary
sources actually yield up as the story contained within them. Myths and ideology
have often dominated these histories, rather than a close reading of historical
documents.
With the formation of the Society, the membership desires to begin to shift
the approach to studying and writing the history of Orthodoxy in the Americas
(and elsewhere, of course, should members wish) to reflect an earnest engagement
with primary sources. There is no jurisdictional agenda attached to SOCHA,
and there is no specific ideology or philosophy which members are required
to share, excepting only the basic integrity crucial to historical study
and the honesty required to have ones premises challenged and revised
should the evidence warrant it. |
